5 Reasons We Skip Breakfast

I totally agree with the saying, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. It is the first meal you eat after the fast that is unconsciously observed when we sleep at night. Skipping the morning meal can throw off your body’s rhythm.

What I mean is: when you wake up, the blood sugar your body needs to make your muscles and brain work their best is usually low. Breakfast helps replenish it. If your body doesn’t get that fuel from food, you may feel zapped of energy — and you’ll be more likely to overeat later in the day.

Asides from that, several studies have somehow connected breakfast to good health, better cognition and reduced risk of lifestyle illnesses. It also provides vitamins from healthy foods that just go with a great morning like grains, dairy, and fruits. Skipping this moment refrains you from getting all the nutrients your body needs thus affecting the body functionality.

All this gist is basically what every article online must have covered. But it doesn’t cover the reason why we (I have to include myself too cause I sometimes forgo the breakfast rule) do not eat breakfast.

So let’s just discuss:

Some common reasons why people skip breakfast and how it can be solved.

 

 

  1. No Time:

Where is the time to catch breakfast between morning devotion, taking care of the kids, cleaning the house and getting ready for work? Especially we ladies; we sure can’t use 30mins to finish our morning ritual.

How can this be solved:

It’s very easy. Stock the house with quick, eat-on-the go meal or something you can eat while driving or when in traffic. Most offices have even made life easy for us. There is usually breakfast in the mornings but for students and co. Stock your house with easy and quick to prepare meals (cereals, bread, fruits, milk and so on). It makes life easy.

OR Better still

Go to bed 30 or 1 hour earlier than you usually do. You wake up earlier and can save some time to prepare your desired meal. I am sure a Lagosian just said, “With this Lagos traffic?” My dear just stick with the first option. We are enjoying Lagos stress together.

  1. It’s a Habit.

The “I am already used to it” reason. We have gotten so used to not eating breakfast that it is now in sync to our physiology and emotions. The body is now used to starving itself in the morning and hunger and satiety for breakfast have been killed.

How can this be solved:

The will to bring back the breakfast ritual lies in your hands. You have to imbibe the culture gradually. Take time to understand your body system, try switching up your routine and go for a breakfast option that appeals to you. Trust me you can become a breakfast person in no time.

 

  1. I am not a morning person, I don’t like making breakfast or doing anything…

If this was you I know this made you laugh. The first struggle we face is standing up from that bed. The rude alarm or the nasty roommate will do us the gorgeous favor of making us stand from the bed. After several, give me 5 more minutes, we eventually stand up and start preparing for work. By the time we are done, we are already running late.

How can this be solved:

Dear Friends, we don’t have any option but to gear up and get to a breakfast shop to buy breakfast or just do what was suggested in number 1; stock the house with easy to grab breakfast.

 

  1. I feel eating breakfast will make me fat. I am on a Diet!

My people, my people, evidence they say is key. From a recent study,  we found out that “fasting made people hungrier and increased the appeal of high-calorie foods and the amount people ate”.

In order word, the more you avoid breakfast, the hungrier you become, the more vulnerable you are to binging and snacking for the rest of the day, the more you journey to the weight GAIN land.

How can this be solved:

Take time to eat a wholesome, freshly prepared breakfast, which will fill you up, give you the necessary nutrients, and take you through to lunch.

 

  1. No Money:

This is actually a tough one, but something that has to be discussed.

How can this be solved:

Leftover food. Store your leftover food in your freezer for special times like this. Or better still get you some beverage and an easy to grab breakfast (bread n co) for the go. For a one man trip, this could cost 150/200naira for the whole meal and you are fine.
